Background

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) was established by the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Act No. 19 of 1995, and empowered to ensure nuclear safety, security and safeguards and to ensure the protection of life, health, property and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation, while allowing beneficial practices involving exposure to ionizing radiation.




Short Term

  1. Reactivate Customs X-Ray scanners and install Radiation Portal Monitors (RPM) at all border posts to check illicit trafficking.
  2. Improve regulatory environment by streamlining regulatory and licensing process.
  3. Ensure all Oil and Gas trainings are industry driven.
  4. Improve security of Nuclear and Radioactive materials used in Oil drilling and Production operations.
  5. Improve capabilities in cost engineering. Optimize the OPMT.
  6. Strengthen engagement with relevant stakeholders.

Medium Term

  1. Engage stakeholders on Roadmap for implementation of key priorities.
  2. Vigorously pursue the development of a blueprint for Youths training and skill acquisition, and monitor compliance.
  3. Review sanctioning policy and procedure.
  4. Minimize Single Sourcing Syndrome.
  5. Vigorously develop training programmes and skill acquisition in the use of Nuclear Technology for Youths and monitor compliance.
  6. Support R & D on Oil recovery using Nuclear techniques.

Long Term

  1. Review sanctioning policy and procedure.
  2. Ensure all Oil and Gas trainings are industry driven.
